Early Life

Nothing is known about Bug's past before her time at the local animal shelter she was taken into at the beginning of March 2026. Her name at the shelter was Butters, but it is unknown whether she was given that name at birth or at the shelter. Her owner, morningsong, has noted that there were no other kittens of a similar coat or age that were taken into the shelter at the time, but it is unclear what it might indicate about Bug's past. Bug is stated by morningsong to have received her name because she "squirms around like a bug."

Morningsong first met Bug on March 11th, when they visited the animal shelter to see the cats. At the shelter, Bug behaved quite timidly, flinching away from loud sounds and shying away from people's touch until she had warmed up to them. According to an interview, morningsong was immediately enamoured by Bug's tortoiseshell coat, which they had only seen in person once before, and her small size. While visiting the first time, they picked Bug up and placed her in their lap, where she fell asleep for a little while. It brought, they said, a smile to their face which they could not temper. After leaving, they could not stop thinking about her, and summarily submitted an application to adopt her. They visited the shelter again on March 13th to see her, on which day the adoption was finalized after a brief interview. A day's wait was required, so Bug was not brought home until the next day, March 14th.

After being brought to her new home, Bug was quite nervous. She spent a lot of time hiding beneath morningsong's bed, or laying beside and on top of them. However, when she felt safe she proved to be very playful, often chasing after the squirrel and feather toys she was sent from the shelter with. After a period of about two weeks, Bug grew used to her new home, and began to show a playful, confident personality entirely divorced from her shyness at the shelter.

In April of 2026, Bug had an appointment to be spayed, which had been arranged in advance by the shelter she was adopted from. On the 15th she was taken back to the shelter, so that they could take her early the morning of the 16th to her appointment. After being watched carefully for any abnormalities, she was safely sent home the next day, April 17th, to continue recovering. Bug was very uncomfortable in the cone she was sent home with, and had to be put into a surgery suit instead for her safety. During the initial healing period of ten days, during which she could not take off her suit, Bug was rather lethargic and spent most of her time sleeping. Upon the removal of her suit, she immediately returned to her playful and energetic self. Despite the worries of her owner, Bug healed without any problems, and continues to be very healthy.

Behavior

A recording of Bug's meow.

Bug is a very energetic and curious cat. She is always excited to play, and will play with anything: charging cords, cat toys, human hands and fingers, bugs, random pieces of plastic, et cetera. When she wants to play, she is known to bat at the feet of morningsong. As of June 2026, her favorite toy is a long feather toy, which she will chase ceaselessly until the human playing with her tires. She is also very fond of chasing small balls.

One of Bug's most prominent traits is her vocalness. Bug has a very high-pitched meow, and meows and trills at all hours of the day. Her most unique sounds have been observed to come out while she is playing: a number of indescribable sounds have been produced during these times. Morningsong once described one of many such sounds as "sounding like a Pokémon cry." Bug is also known to meow repeatedly when walking up to someone she is excited to see. Curiously, she has been heard in other rooms producing strange, desolate meows, but it is unclear what she is meowing at or why. In response to comments about Bug's unique chatter, morningsong said, "She meows all the time at everything, so none of her noises can surprise me anymore."

Like other domestic cats, Bug spends a lot of time sleeping. She takes many small naps throughout the day, in various places. Her favorite places have been catalogued as being next to or on top of morningsong, in front of a window she can look out of, a specific corner of the couch, and a corner next to a bookshelf. She also seems to sleep when morningsong sleeps: although she will get up and eat, drink, or walk around, when morningsong sleeps Bug will spend most of that time sleeping near them.

Other notable behaviors include: following morningsong into every room, waiting outside the door when morningsong takes a shower or goes into the bathroom, watching Resident Evil Requiem streams with morningsong and swiping at the screen when they get scared, and trying to burrow into the spaces between the cushions on the couch.

Achievements

Bug is most well-known for unanimously winning a poll that every person on Earth participated in, which questioned participants on who the cutest cat in the world is. She has also been praised for fearlessly attacking the bugs that get into her and morningsong's home, so morningsong doesn't have to deal with them.

Controversies

Morningsong has been recorded multiple times complaining about Bug's tendency to swipe at their feet when they stick out from beneath blankets. Due to morningsong's troubles with temperature regulation, their feet become overheated quickly, which can make sleeping difficult because Bug will attack their feet if they try to stick them out of their blankets. However, morningsong has stated that they forgive Bug for it.
